High arches: everything you need to know

High arches (pes cavus) put extra load on the heel and ball of the foot. The causes, the symptoms, and how insoles, exercises or surgery can help.

By Dr. Luigi ManziUpdated on

The arch of the foot can be defined as normal if it provides a balance between rigidity and flexibility. If, however, there is an absence of adequate curvature, then it is called flat foot . When, however, the arch is excessively accentuated and causes incorrect weight distribution, it is usually referred to as a curved arch.

The arch of the foot extends from the base of the toes to the heel. It is an anatomical structure that plays a fundamental role in the stability and functionality of the foot. The arch of the foot is the natural curvature formed by bones, ligaments, and muscles that absorbs shock, supports weight, creates balance, stabilizes movement, and helps adapt to changes in terrain.

When the arch of the foot is out of balance, it can lead to foot and ankle pain, postural problems, and an increased risk of injury. These possible arch alterations can be congenital or develop over time due to various factors. The causes of arch alterations can be genetic or linked to certain poor habits, such as wearing inappropriate footwear, having suffered specific injuries, or suffering from neuromuscular disorders.

What symptoms do you have when you have a high arch in your foot?

High arch of the foot

A more arched foot than normal can cause pain and swelling. When the change is particularly severe, it can cause difficulty walking. Those with arched foot arches may also suffer from frequent cramps.

Diagnosis and possible treatments for a high arch of the foot

Diagnosis of hollow foot

The diagnosis of this specific foot deformity is based on a series of tests, starting with a clinical assessment of posture and gait. Radiographic examinations can identify any abnormalities in the bones of the foot. A baropodometric examination, on the other hand, analyzes the distribution of weight on the foot to determine the degree of alteration of the arch.

Depending on the severity of the condition, conservative therapies may be considered, such as orthopedic insoles or specific physiotherapy exercises for those with a high arch. As is often the case with other foot problems, wearing appropriate footwear for those with this structural alteration of the foot can help improve stability and reduce pain. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the deformity.

How to prevent a high arch in your foot

Physiotherapy

To reduce the risk of developing a significant alteration in the structure of your foot arch, or more generally, arch-related problems, it's advisable to perform targeted exercises to strengthen the plantar fascia and maintain proper posture. Wearing shoes that support the arch of the foot helps prevent excessive strain on the joints. Avoiding prolonged standing without adequate support and maintaining a balanced body weight also contribute to foot health. Regular stretching can also improve flexibility and prevent muscle and joint strain.

What are the possible complications?

If left untreated, an excessively high arch can lead to several complications, including foot or ankle arthritis , tendonitis, plantar fasciitis or heel spurs , and tarsal tunnel syndrome. In some cases, structural deformities can occur that affect the stability and function of the foot.
